From Hero to Zero

The night when nitedog become chickens?

Ex Night Dog # 6 (50 km)
Saturday 9 May, 7 pm
Venue : Changi Beach Car park 1
Start : 7.30 pm sharp
Route : Sundown marathon route
Mileage : 50 Km
Pace : O.T.O.T. (Own Time Own Target)

Water/support stations
22km (ECP Car park CP4)

Sounded beri "how lian" hor

But we are all humbled, it is chicken soup for the "how lian" soul. To be more precise Herbal Chicken soup :)

Due to the Vesak day holiday, East Coast Park was jam-pack. We arrived ECP carpark at 6.30pm to arrange the Water station, it took us another 1hr 30 mintues to reach Changi Park Car park 1.

The run finally started at 8.15pm, the night was extreme hot and humid, everyone feel the heat. After 10km it was like running in a sauna. I reached the u-turn point at Big Splash (20km) in 2:10 and promptly hit the wall! the next 2km to water point took nearly 20 minutes. After 4 bottle of drinks and a 30 minutes break, we continued but alas! the heart's may be willing but the legs and mind were not!!! It was game over at 25km for William, Jeniffer and Botak, the bright neon light of Seng Kee Herbal Chicken soup along Changi road beckon. After makan, took a cab back to finish point and discovered many others were there orledi, albeit by car or cabs :) Even our man of steel Calvin, gave up with just 2 km to go, he finally succumb to Daniel offer of a ride. Only Li Bin completed the course, thanks handsome, you salvage some pride for us - 1 nite dog survived!

Coffee, Running and Fats Burning

So what does coffee, running and burning fats have in common?

Attached is an article from 早报 which exalt the advantages of coffee does to running. For the benefit of those non-chinese helicoptor, can someone translate this to ang moh:)) Ok lah I will start the ball rolling by translating the title to "ang moh"

喝杯咖啡再运动,加速减肥 (drink copi then exercise, quick quick minus fat)

喝咖啡跑马去 (sing to the tune of 让我们看云去)

Botak为什么哭泣 难道真的已跑不下去
Botak不会再叹息 因为心里已没有顾虑
大家唱

一年一马 大家都可以
膝盖伤了 那就先休息
一月一马 没什么了不起
drink your coffee 让我们跑马去

So what are you waiting for? Drink your coffee O, one month one horse sure can one hor:)

Ex Nitedog - 42km Familiarization run of Sundown Marathon

Ex Nitedog #3 - 11 Apr 2009, 42km Familiarization Run of Sundown Marathon F.R.

Start/Finish Point : ECP Mac

Most runners were there by 7.30 pm, but due to a hectic Saturday afternoon, botak was late and the run didn’t start at 8 as plan - “pie-say”. Ah Chen was very serious this time, he came with his camel bag.

At 9 pm sharp we started with Libin staying behind for Ernest who called to say he will be late.

Some runners are not familiar with the route, so we ran in a pack at an easy 8min/km. The first over head bridge to Victoria Junior College was a breeze since it was the beginning of our run.

William and company started to gather speed and they forgot to stop at Check Point #1, Kembangan MRT. Ah Tan was trying out his new strategy – walking at 7-8 min pace and wow-lau he out-walk most of us. I reckon at his walking speed he don't have to run, just walk and finish the ultra marathon in under 12 hour!

After crossing the over head bridge at PIE, I sped up to chase the front group to remind them to run in a pack. Caught them at Check Point #2 Bedok Reservoir Park toilet. We waited there for Ernest and Libin before continuing.

When we turn into Bedok Reservoir, instead of going down the stair case and run along the flat path by the parameter of the reservoir, our front group ran and we follow straight up the steep steep slope, next time don't be so "key kiang" Please follow the actual route!!

At Tampines Ave 9 , the row of coffee shops beckon, Ah Bay stop for some “pao” and I obliged with a 100 plus, surprisingly ah hoo resisted the temptation and move on without stopping :) By this time, Zhao Ming was low on fuel and lagging behind, our kind Ah Bay volunteer to pace and encourage him on. At Check Point #3, petrol kiosk beside Pasir Ris Drive 3 , Mag our front runner was waiting there with more 100 plus.

After the brief break, we hit the long gentle up hill along Pasir Ris Drive 3. Turning left we were at Loyang Avenue, this time the up and down slopes didn’t bother us much as compared to last year (but it was the last 5.62km then).

As punctual as Cinderella, we reached Changi Beach Park (24km) at the stroke of 12 mid night. The drinks, bananas, chocolate, pizza was gone in the 30 min breaks.

The arrival of the Boss

The arrival of the "Clowns"

Zhao Ming retired at this point to drive the support vehicle back to starting point. Ah Bay and Mag took the opputurnity to join him.

Since we are familiar with the remaining route, run continue at O.T.O.T. The 6 km long straight Changi Coast road that runs parallel to the airport runway was make even more monotonous as there were no landing and taking off of jumbos’ at this wee hour.

Arrived at NSRCC (35km) at 1.45 am, Toby and his lovely wife were there to support us. I change to my MBT shoe to test my walking speed for the last 7.5 km.

My game plan for May ultra marathon is to run the 1st 42km, change to MBT and walk the next 20-30km then back to Asics for my finishing. Target – below 13 hour.

The long and short 2XUAh Chen, where is your camel bag?

2 am home run or should it be home walk! with my MBT walking at a speed of 7-8km/hr is manageable. Completed the run/walk at 3 am. We proceed to an early MacDonald breakfast to reward ourselves.

Post note – We were supposed to do another 12 km walk to test the run/walk strategy , but since it was late, every one were more then glad to stop at 42k :))

2009 Tokyo Marathon

We are back from Tokyo marathon. Knowing it was a flat and fast course, we went there with an expectation of running our PB (Personal Best). William aim to break 4 and your humble botak wanted dearly to go into 4:30. Look what Tokyo done to us ! or should it be the other way round - "look what we done to Tokyo"

William 04:30

Botak 05:32 :)). (55 mins slower then my PB of 04:37)

Tokyo marathon, 30,000 full marathon runners plus 2 pirate marathon runners. We were group in the J starting block (5.30h finish), gun went off at exactly 9.10 am and it took us 15 min to cross the starting line. Japanese are well know for their efficiency and Tokyo didn't disappoint, from race expo to start and finish it was clock wise precision. Spectators? ai-say-man! despite the cold weather, it was drizzling and with wind blowing at a speed at up to 40kph, they were still there in full force lining up the whole 42.195km cheering, encouraging and adding a colorful festival mood to the event. And did I told you there was so many makan given out enthusiastically by those wonderful people. Libin says Xiamen mara = mini buffet., then Tokyo must be Lines @ Shangri La , chocolate, candy, biscuit, cookie, coffee tea or me , red bean soup, miso soup, tao sar bun, custard bun... the makan goes on and on ......

Maybe due to the many high rise building, the GPS of my Garmin 305 gone hey-wire, how can i be running as fast as 33kph!! When I reached the 10km distance marker ( 305 say 11.3 km !) it was already 70 min, knowing I can't achieves my PB, I decided to soak in the atmosphere, enjoy the fun, festival mood/food and took as many pictures as possible. I specially bought a new Fuji WPZ "water proof" camera and it was water proof alright but the battery life "suck" to the core. the camera shouts low battery loudly after only 50+ shots. Had to stop because need to reserve for finishing. At 40 km, the rain got heavier, told myself die die also must take dancing in the rain , so out come my nokia E71, more shoots in the rain and now my phone is dead :( (

Moral of the story #1 - Buy a water proof Phone too
Moral of the story #2 - If you want to achieve your PB, don't do Tokyo, the festival mood and makan will distract you
Moral of the story #3 - If you really want to achieve your PB , DON'T EVER RUN with a CAMERA! :)

After thought of Tokyo Marathon -

Applauses dies away
Trophies gather dust
Winners are soon forgotten
But Memories remains
Running marathon is not only just about getting PB, it is also about enjoying the companies, be overwhelm by the experiences, humble by fellow runner's passion and share the joy and happiness with your friends. Life is short! seize the moment. I've learned that running is a journey, not a destination. There is no better time to start running than right now! So work like you don't need the money(give them to me), love like you've never been hurt (love hurts), dance like no one's watching (salsa anyone?) and run like.. run like.. a loan shark is chasing :))

Will do a full Tokyo mara FR later.

Tokyo, good run, good fun. Next year we will be back as registered runner.

My over confident, fool hardy, big audacious target time 04:29:59

22 Mar, 8.30 am, Q @ J block

So kiasu! we had 5 layers - 2XU compression top, 2XU singlet, Asics T, Reebok wind breaker and an 80 cents disposal rain coat

Off he goes, william was too fast for me
The supportive crowd lining the streets of Tokyo
Pay peanuts and you get monkeys
Give red bean bun and you get botak freddyDon't play play, that pair of SKINS sleeve cost a cool US$80.
Rain dance
Price for this shot? My Nokia E71 dead
Price for this shot?? My fuji camera battery clonk off
